Amrita Sarkar

Term: 23 May 2025 – 31 December 2026 (with possible extension until 31 December 2027)

Amrita Sarkar has dedicated around 25 years to advocating for the LGBTIQ+ community, with a particular focus on transgender individuals. Throughout her career, she has spearheaded numerous capacity-building initiatives at both the national and international levels to empower transgender communities. She is a founding member and serves as the Secretary of IRGT – A Global Network of Trans Women and HIV. Additionally, she holds the position of Co-chair at WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) and is the Secretary of IPATH (Indian Professional Association for Transgender Health). She is also a member of the Transgender Persons Technical Working Group established by the National AIDS Control Organisation, India. Currently, she works as an Advisor for Transgender Wellbeing & Advocacy at the India HIV/AIDS Alliance.

Alliance India (India HIV/AIDS Alliance) has been a leading force in India’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS since 1999. The organisation collaborates with the Government of India, State governments, civil society organisations, the private sector, and communities to promote a sustained response to HIV and other related public health challenges, contributing to the development of healthier communities.

Vision of the organisation: A world in which no one dies of AIDS.

Mission of the organisation: To support community action to prevent HIV infection, meet the challenges of AIDS, and build healthier communities.

Our NGO Delegation

The Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) was created to serve as the governing body of UNAIDS. The PCB includes a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) Delegation composed of five members and five alternates that represent five geographic regions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America.

UNAIDS was established in 1994 through a resolution of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and made operational in January 1996.
