Amanita Calderón-Cifuentes (she/her) is a Colombian Two-Spirit scientist and passionate trans activist with over a decade of research expertise in microbiology and cellular stress responses. Her work focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly in addressing infectious diseases like HIV and mpox. As a molecular microbiologist living with HIV, Amanita uniquely combines scientific knowledge with lived experience, serving as a bridge between research and community advocacy. She has collaborated with organizations such as Gilead Sciences, ViiV Healthcare, EATG, and AAE on educational and advocacy initiatives related to HIV.
In her role at Trans Europe and Central Asia (TGEU), Amanita partners with UNAIDS, WHO, and ECDC to drive policy changes that enhance healthcare access and protections for trans communities. With an intersectional and decolonial perspective, she advocates for systemic reforms while supporting trans communities at heightened risk of violence and discrimination, including trans sex workers, trans people who use drugs, and trans migrants and refugees. Her dedication lies in uplifting and empowering trans individuals across Europe and Central Asia, ensuring they can live with dignity and equality.
Trans Europe and Central Asia (TGEU) is a pioneering organization committed to advancing the rights and well-being of trans people throughout Europe and Central Asia. Established in 2005, TGEU envisions a world free from discrimination, violence, and inequality, where trans individuals’ rights and dignity are universally respected. Through an intersectional and decolonial approach, TGEU addresses the unique challenges faced by trans people in diverse social, cultural, and economic contexts.
TGEU empowers trans communities by advocating for legal protections, promoting inclusive healthcare, and challenging harmful narratives. By leveraging research, policy advocacy, and capacity-building, the organization amplifies trans voices and confronts systemic injustices. With over 200 member organizations, TGEU is a leader in trans rights advocacy at both regional and international levels, working collaboratively to foster sustainable, inclusive change for trans people worldwide.
