The UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board NGO Delegation are pleased to announce the launch of the first video charting the work of the NGO community on the governing body of the United Nations’ AIDS programme.

26th PCB Thematic Session

The 26th PCB Meeting thematic session was on “linking Sexual and Reproductive Health Services to HIV Interventions in Practice” and took place for a full day on the 22nd of June, 2010. The day opened with a panel of speakers including Lydia Mungherera, Africa NGO Delegate; Michel Sidibe, UNAIDS Executive Director; Ricky Swuanpyae(Speech)(Presentation) Ambassador Venetia Sebudandi, Permanent Representative of Rwanda to the UN Office and other International Organisations in Geneva (Speech); and Luisa Cabal, Center for Reproductive Rights (Presentation). Shortly after, the board members were invited to participate in two of the four breakout sessions (final rapporteur presentations listed below). The day closed with an interactive discussion facilitated by Kevin Osbourne, IPPF with the four rapporteurs of the breakout sessions as panellists. The presentations of each of the breakout sessions were compiled into one presentation, available here.

The agenda item “Ensuring non-discrimination in responses to HIV” included the presentation of the NGO Report, the UNAIDS presentation of their report on non-discrimination and two panelists who responded to these presentations, one from civil society and the other a government representative. Update on the implementation of the Action Framework on Women and Girls at the 26th PCB

The 26th PCB was presented with an update on the implementation of the UNAIDS Action Framework on Women, Girls, Gender Equality and HIV (Action Framework) through a written report and a presentation at the meeting given by Bernhard Schwartlander from the UNAIDS Secretariat. As a gender and HIV activist, getting the opportunity to attend the 26th UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) meeting In Geneva, Switzerland, as a female youth observer was very important for me.
Coming from Zimbabwe where HIV infection leans more towards women than men, I am always aware of the need for women and girl’s empowerment against oppressive gender norms if my nation is to ever overcome the epidemic which still stands towering above us at over 14% prevalence.

For many people, learning about the birds and bees happens through very interesting ways. And sadly, it is rare for people, especially people who come from conservative cultures, to learn about sex and sexuality from their parents and elders who are usually able to give them a fuller and more accurate understanding of the topic than magazines, TV or equally clueless peers.

The 26th PCB Meeting took place on 22-24 June, 2010 in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting concluded with several key decisions particularly from the agenda items on the outcomes of the thematic session, ensuring non-discrimination in responses to HIV, the Second Independent Evaluation follow up in relation to governance, the mission statement, reducing HIV transmission among men who have sex with men and transgender people and gender sensitivity of the AIDS response. The NGO Delegation Communiqué, a short report of the meeting highlighting key outcomes will be available shortly.
