Sean Strub, founder of POZ Magazine and Senior Advisor to rthe Positive Justice Project, has been an important supporter of the NGO Delegation during the development of this year’s NGO Report on legal environments and HIV responses.
“HIV Is Not A Crime” is Sean’s documentary film project about HIV criminalization. This eight minute trailer from the film features moving interviews with Nick Rhoades, Robert Suttle and Monique Howell Moree, who were all prosecuted for failing to disclose their HIV positive status prior to sexual contact.
Rhoades was sentenced in Iowa to 25 years in prison and lifetime sex offender registration, even though he used a condom and had an undetectable viral load at the time of the sexual contact. Suttle received six months in prison and 15 years on the Louisiana sex offender registry. After they broke up, Suttle’s former boyfriend went to the police to press charges. Moree was tried in a military court and faced eight to 12 years, even though the man she had sex with did not want her prosecuted. The charges were ultimately dropped but she was kicked out of the Army. Further interviews for “HIV Is Not A Crime” are underway.
